Portable Pilot Units and Electronic Charts - What does the user really need?

Southern Region
Date12 May 2011
Time12:00 - 18:00
VenueSouthampton Solent University Conference Centre

Portable Pilot Units (PPU) are now used in a number of ports to bring electronic charts and precise positioning together in a convenient and portable package for marine pilots.

Although pilots and other marine professionals have been involved in the development of both products for many years, the current equipment has been commercially developed and must necessarily incorporate compromises to make it both practical and economically viable.

Now that such equipment has been in use for a few years, the professional societies representing mariners, pilots and chart producers have decided that the time is right for review. The Hydrographic Society UK (Southern Region), Nautical Institute (Solent Branch) and United Kingdom Maritime Pilots Association have therefore joined together to organise this seminar.

The programme will address the problems associated with using this equipment in the light of real experience, and consider what improvements might be made in the future. The afternoon will be split into three sessions covering:

  • PPU Hardware
  • Electronic Charts and ECDIS, and
  • The Human Element and User Training

Delegate Fees
